if you die,
let me keep a
favorite piece of
your worn clothing
to hang in guest closet,
or lay folded in deep drawer
when i’m lonely, i will pull it
out to touch a precious memory
cuddle softly round my neck
bury face in warm texture
dampen with my tears
smell your love
once again.

I think this is a common practice to keep an article of clothing of someone we’ve lost. A tender, bitter-sweet poem.

I understand the sentiments here, Lynn! The scent of someone lasts for quite a while….. My mother kept a shirt of my dad’s for quite a while.

…and the memories last forever. Thanks, Mary.

Been there…you know the rest…

Great minds & all that, with your Nose-stalgia & my Nosescape. I wonder how long the departed one’s scent can linger sealed up? Excellent take on the prompt, leaving me both sad & smiling for you (or your character poetically).

agree…great titles 🙂

Truly true. I have a tee shirt kept carefully in quadrupled Ziploc baggies that after all these years smell of sandalwood aftershave….and once in a blue moon, I take it out and inhale deeply. This poem truly resonated with me.

Ah, you understand the memories invoked!

I do indeed.

Very clever title…and such a wonderful poem…love the last 2 lines “smell your love once again”. Heart-breaking in a way, and yet heart-warming too!

Thanks, Bryan…the smell of a loved one’s clothes has brought me comfort.

Love the title right off… and you left me with a smile, imagining the smell of love.
