young and green

we each begin as young and green
like tender shoot and sapling lean

we’re curious and want to learn
what life’s about, to take our turn

to find the light, to make a friend,
to run away… come back again.

as we discover who we are
we wonder if we’ll reach that star?

this world broadcasts fearful voices
which lead us into foolish choices

thank God, in love, he reaches down
to rescue hearts and lost are found

as children listen to wisdom’s way
they grow up strong, learn to obey
and, best of all, know how to pray.

Dora hosts dVerse with “young and green” prompt…I was going to write my own young and green memories but it turned into a homily for my grandchildren.

As I pray for loved ones who either don’t know Jesus at all, or who aren’t currently walking with him, these lines spoke especially to my heart: “Thank God, in love, he reaches down to rescue hearts and lost are found.” I know that’s true, and am grateful, Lynn, for the affirmation you provided today!

Dora, this sounds like a nice poem for children to ponder on.

Especially the children who know you and read your poems.

So enjoyed the rhyme and voice of this! Especially struck by this unexpected pivot: “this world broadcasts fearful voices” — Something common to childhood in every age, as we reach for that “star” but — Praise God, for He is and always will be our ever-fixed star, unchanging, and for those whose instructions turn our children to look to Him for every need, in every fear. Such an incredible poem, Lynn, from start to finish, following a common childhood trajectory with what is increasingly becoming an uncommon foundation of faith. Beautifully done, my friend. 😀💖
