mona lisa’s smile

theory 1:

my son says

it was the only

smile she could

muster after sitting

for four years and

the painter still said

“it’s not finished”.

theory 2:

i think maybe

Lisa stifled a giggle

as she changed her

pose ever so slightly

to watch Leonardo

squint and frown

behind his easel.

Ha, this made me smile! To me, the “smile” looks more like a grimace.

I like these theories. Many art “experts say she is not really smiling, that is placement of shadows….whatever, it was a pleasure to make her acquaintance in the Louvre…I like the Bell’s Palsy comment above…could be!!!! 🙂

Ha. I think you may be onto something here. I think your sons theory is totally solid, but I like that she might have been playing a trick moving just a bit. Maybe that was the magic that came to be in the painting.

I love these theories! Why should something be simply one certain thing?

Maybe she had crooked rotten teeth, or maybe even De Vinci could not penetrate the mystery of her lack of self-love, or maybe, as theorists suggest, it is De Vinci himself that posed for it in a mirror, the first of the transgender triumphs .

I like your whimsical, funny take on that painting.

Very fun. Maybe she had Bells Palsy and couldn’t move her lips any other way.
