love divine

dear Jesus, son of Father God above
Spirit confirms you are my one true love

for you created me in mother’s womb
you chose me from the start as own true love

Father, you are attentive to my prayers
the details of my life blessed by true love

my Savior, you gave up your life for mine
high ransom paid, you claim me as true love

you have forgiven my unfaithfulness
and will remain forever first true love

sweet Spirit gently speak to weary heart
to reassure Lynn you’re her best true love!

This is my attempt at writing a ghazal. A ghazal is usually about love, either romantic or divine. It is written in couplets with a repeating refrain. In English, the meter is natural, like iambic pentameter. The final line includes the author’s name. Gay Reiser Cannon shares samples of the ghazal form at dVerse Poets pub…

Beautiful mixture of ghazal and prayer! True Love indeed can come only from the Saviour!

This is a great way to use the ghazal… really follows the tradition of using the passion in religion.

I was reminded of my studies about passion in poetry. We were told but weren’t able to read the poems of St. John of the Cross who wrote passionate love songs to the Deity and there was a nun who did so also, perhaps it was Hildegard of Bingen who is very famous for many things.I think this form lends itself to mystical and religious writing. This was very moving and well done.
I wrote a poem and name it Passion once. You might enjoy it. It’s written in dialogue.I’ll give you the link here. People often think it’s the voice of Mary Magdalen. I did not have that in mind as I wrote it. But make of it what you will. I feel like sharing it:

Gay, thanks for a great prompt and your comments here. I followed your link and was blown away by your poem, Passion…like a modern Song of Solomon and the Passion of Christ combined! What wondrous love is this.

Thank you. I wrote it quite a while ago, but it was for all the same reasons I think you wrote yours for this. I appreciate your words, and the direction you’re taking your work. Well done.

A meaningful ghazal with tribute to the spiritual tribute to: blessed by true love.

I also like the ending couplet with your own name. Thanks Lynn for joining our poetry form challenge.

Lovely! You certainly captured the Sufi tradition of spiritual love and made it your own by the light of your faith. The last couplet is so well done in particular, as it personalizes this belief and love even further.
