crater lagoon, nicaragua

one-midsummer-morning-at-rydal-web

ubiquitous mists of cloud forest
layered in reflective lagoon’s
volcanic depths harboring ancient
crustaceans which rarely dare to
skim surface to kiss rhythmic raindrop
ripples while howler monkeys
groom their mates and sloths sleep
in green arms of upper canopy

farmers of nearby village
oblivious to jaguar’s hunger
herd a meager group of thin
cows past tin huts with leaky banana-
leaf thatched roofs, making mud of
dirt floors where chickens scratch
and little children play with pebbles
while mamas prepare tortillas

I like the way you mingle mystery and mundane life. (K)

This is beautifully vivid! I especially love; “cows past tin huts with leaky banana-

Wow, you really conjure a scene here. I like the contrast between the lushness of the jungle and the harshness of the village – and then we end with the mammas feeding. Lovely.

It’s so vivid. I’m longing to be right there in the green-armed embrace.

I love all the movement in the poem, Lynn, like a camera sweeping up from the lagoon and swinging round at the scenes beneath the forest canopy, full of lively activity, and contentment.
