shy, precious girl
blushing in pink,
found yet lost
floating between green
dreams downstream
of rocky waterfall…
seems deeply refreshed
in shallows of peaceful
slumber but strangely
oblivious to cries…
no obvious trace
of blood where
tragedy struck
after family picnic.
frantic questions
why her? why now?
fell…pushed…or
(no!) jumped??

She reclines in peace awaiting the coroner. Darkly beautiful.

Brilliant, Lynn! You’ve turned this painting to cover art and made me see it with new eyes. Now I want to go and read an Agatha Christie. 🙂

So sad. Those questions of why and what happened.
Recently a family on vacation north of Philadelphia drowned in a flash flood incident, including a little girl and her mother.

Heartbreaking! A neighbor of ours died accidentally in his shop while his family was vacationing at a lake. He had planned to join them.

I’m so sorry. That’s a horrible tragedy.

So many people die every year, for the lure of taking selfies in difficult picnic spots. Your poem reminded me of those unfortunate incidents.

Yes, so preventable with a little caution.

I like the way you start with gentle words, Lynn, in the lines:
‘floating on dreams
as if deeply refreshed in
shallows of peaceful
slumber…’
and then twist the poem with ‘strangely oblivious to cries’ to take us to a darker place, of tragedy at a family picnic. The questions had me wondering.

I wanted that surprising twist…thanks for commenting on it, Kim.

She looks like floating on dreams. In the end though, that is a mystery but still a tragedy. Thanks for joining in Lynn.
