off-season hey-haibun

In northern U.S., desperados (a.k.a. winter snow birds) travel off-season; heading due south/southwest in search of warmer weather.  Content to leave blowing snow and ice behind, they drive their posse of bumper-hitch campers, fifth-wheels and motorhomes on clearer roads under clearing skies.  Some set hopes on a certain destination while others simply wish to wander anywhere there’s sunshine or long arm of the law can’t reach.  After staring between jail bars at bare deciduous branches,  sightings of cacti and palm trees give welcome relief; every green or blooming plant serves delight to dulled senses.  Creativity thaws, dreams awaken, and youth renews with soothing warmth.  Here, even the animal outlaws avoid hibernation.

under his wings

God covers me

with his gentle hand

like a warm coat

in winter winds.

He covers me

with his wide mercy

like a big umbrella

in spring downpour.

He covers me

with his tender love

like a bridal tent

in summer sun.

He covers me

with his life’s blood

like a full pardon

in fall starkness.

He covers me

with his eternal grace

like a safe shelter

in all seasons.

“We live under an umbrella of goodness and mercy.”  (Pastor T. on Psalm 23)

“I am my beloved’s and he is mine…his banner over me is love.” (Song of Songs)

sound of silence

drop pair of cold titanium frames

on fresh powder in front of feet;

thrust lightweight  poles within reach,

stuck together upright in deep fluff.

flex body forward in layered clothing,

balance on one leg, insert opposite boot,

clicking two buckle mechanisms till tight;

repeat; grip pole handles with fat mittens.

nippy south wind awakens indoor face,

pricks exposed cheeks below nordic cap,

breath quickly dampening fuzzy scarf.

turn deliberately toward western grove;

reaching forward, outward with poles to

navigate between scruffy garden shrubs,

crampons biting to grip frozen ridges

of tilled earth underneath winter cloak.

tramping unique imprint on landscape,

poles squeak slightly as baskets turn

when piercing frozen drift, snowshoes

crunch if climbing crusty layers of base.

brush past rustling spruce, spill snow;

circumvent unexpected fallen branch to

continue making trail: shush-shush-shush

pause, listen to palpable sound of silence.

*written for d’verse “blind poet” prompt:

while i wouldn’t want to snowshoe blindfolded,

i did attempt to write this using other senses

going postal in deep freeze

clinging to mail with both hands

in the face of a whipping wind,

i trek down long gravel driveway

making heavy footprints in snow.

my body is wrapped in layers

with only squinting eyes exposed.

mitten tugs on stiff metal door;

it opens with protesting creak

to accept offering of bills paid.

i brush out powder blown in,

make a careful deposit, slam

door and set red flag upright.

mailbox swings from its chains;

wind stronger, colder at roadside.

snow-dusted cows watch

curiously as i trundle back to

farmhouse, leaving fresh tracks.

later today, i will dress again

to repeat the ritual, hoping for

a handwritten envelope hidden

between all the advertisements!
