lost (a found poem)

in forest,
a dark twig
lifted its whisper

my lips,
voice crying
cracked, torn

something
secret hidden by
muffled, moist leaves

waken from
dreaming, drifting
fragrance of conscious

mind roots
i left behind, lost,
wounded by wandering

********

“Found”poem taken from Pablo Neruda’s “Lost in the Forest”:

Lost in the forest, I broke off a dark twig
and lifted its whisper to my thirsty lips:
maybe it was the voice of the rain crying,
a cracked bell, or a torn heart.

Something from far off it seemed
deep and secret to me, hidden by the earth,
a shout muffled by huge autumns,
by the moist half-open darkness of the leaves.

Wakening from the dreaming forest there, the hazel-sprig
sang under my tongue, its drifting fragrance
climbed up through my conscious mind

as if suddenly the roots I had left behind
cried out to me, the land I had lost with my childhood–
and I stopped, wounded by the wandering scent.

The expressionism created in this poem is really authentic.

The way you have cut away at the words of the original has exposed a deeper despair – so well crafted Lynn.

I love the way you’ve crystallized the poem. (K)

Nice job of cutting to the core Lynn. Strong!

I found this even darker… there is not even hope for the lost wanderer.

I’m sure Neruda would approve of this. Wow. And with less words. Excellent. Thanks.

The found poem is sharper and sadder than Neruda’s original, where the pain stands out more acutely.

Far from whimsical, your version invades the shadows and the stony heart; excellent “found” version.

Bravo Lynn – this is Neruda pared to the bone and what you include speaks volumes!

This is bleaker than the original. There’s much more of a feeling of damage here.

Amazing parsing of Neruda’s words here.
