______________
last lazy summer day in pastures green
one week of freedom before starting school
stiff grasses tickle, prickle calloused feet
noon sun shines hot but breezes gently cool
two cousins sit together amiably
companionship does not require words
they watch the cows while clouds float easily
from distant trees, they hear the caw of birds
they dream a pirate’s dream on desert isle
of treasure buried deep beneath the sand
although there’s no high seas for many a mile
boys can imagine sword fights on dry land
covered by straw hats, long hair falls in curls
time’s brief, as young minds soon will follow girls

I love how I can feel this poem, the clouds, the breeze, the innocence of the children. It’s beautiful ❤️

WOW, Lynn.
This is such a stunning sonnet. I find sonnets very difficult to write, personally. And I love your ending ~ it’s so “boy’ish”! As a boy, I can very well relate to it!
Also, mazal tov on being selected by Sally as our new “Poet of the Week” (PoW) for W3 this week! I’ve e-mailed you an email with “next steps” at wi…ga@mtcnet.net
If you haven’t received it (because sometimes my emails end up in people’s ‘spam’ folders), please email me directly at:

Thanks so much!

A sonnet!! I’m always in awe of beautifully written sonnets — and yours is no exception. The third stanza — with pirates and sword fights — was perfect. Yes, yes — a snapshot of boys. Well done!

Thank you much, Sally…sonnets are not easy but this one seemed to flow (and I think I understand boys, having raised 5!) 🙂
Sep 08, 2024 @ 15:29:38
Ha! I had 5 boys too!!
Sep 09, 2024 @ 20:54:47
Yes?!! and we both survived!

I really loved this sonnet and the way you captured boys — so much that I choose you to be POW next week. Congratulations!
