paternity

my father
has been gone
exactly a year today
and the memories of
his dying taste like chalk
on a parched tongue…
but the memories of his living
smell like mountain trout,
burnt cream puffs, chlorine
of pool where he saved me
from drowning.

raise glass to new year
candlelight and stars twinkle

raise glass to new year
share toast and kiss at midnight
uncork thankfulness

candlelight and stars twinkle
hold out brave hopes for future
in uncertain darkness

above champagne seas,
wild waves roll with bubbly foam
high tide is rising
