El toro

The bull stands

bulky in black velvet

with formal white face

above thick muscled neck

and massive humped shoulders.

He flares paired nostrils

and paws with front hoof,

tossing broad head and

flinging dirt past rounded rump.

We admire this brute power…

looking over rail of sturdy fence.

What a wonderful bunch of bull; kudos for choosing an animal overlooked by others. Your first lines about /black velvet/ made me think it was a poem about a Mexican black velvet bull fighting painting; but you pushed us right into the pen with it; cool.

I like all the strong action verbs you use: really captures the power and nervousness of the animal. I had a close encounter with a bull in a field once (while out running) and it made me run ever so fast!

I am so glad in this poem, the bull lived and did not get gored! Bravo!

Yes of course, admiring from the distance is being prudent ~ Very nice perspective ~

i don’t doubt you’d try getting in the pen with him, Brian…my husband and sons have to at times…oldest son did some bull riding but i’m glad it wasn’t his career choice!

I love that last line! Majestic animals, as long as we keep our space! Great work.
