A documentary poem linked to dVerse poetics…
Eighty-six years young,
energetic octogenarian
on outing with daughter
and husband, who can
vouch as eye-witnesses,
was seen walking around
the stockyards, up and
down stairs holding rails,
shared smoked turkey legs,
even stayed for evening
rodeo past usual bedtime.
Months later, following
corona-virus outbreak,
an old man walks out of
his assisted living home,
slips off curb behind his
parked car, recovers, sells
said vehicle, exchanges
for walker to roam halls
takes two naps daily,
even loses weight from
not eating well alone,
zoom marks 87th year.

I’m so sorry. That was a quick set back. Hard for him and his family.

Yes, it’s been difficult for my dad 😦

I am so sorry. Bless his heart.

All the beautifully accrued imagery of health and vigor, reduced to what’s left after sickness, the exchange of car to walker, activity for naps, makes this that much more moving and powerful. The wealth of detail, Lynn, drives the sad reality home.

Ageing is so very difficult for so many. And this Covid has made it all the more so. I pray he is loved by those around him.

How sad for him. I feel for the aged community who must isolate themselves from their family due the pandemic. I am sure the isolation and loneliness are hard to bear.

I feel you Lynn. I am blessed to be on the ground floor with my wife, while my son, daughter-in-law, and grandson are on the second floor. I do not know how I would have endured this madness so far without them near.

Wonderful to have family close by! We’ve been able to see all of our sons, wives, and grands during the pandemic but Dad and my brother’s family are 600 miles away.

It’s a sad time for those in and with relatives in assisted living. I feel for both of you. (K)

Wow “If the right one doesn’t get you the left one will…” Some people are like the energizer bunny… Great poem Lynn!
