fox family

foxes build homes of cool earth;

burrows dug deep under changeable skies.

in dark den, a vixen gives birth,

to sightless pups who whimper where mom lies.

Creator God, to you all creatures raise myriad voices united in praise.

underground, newborn fox kits pass each hour

waiting for father who prowls, growling this night;

hunts by scent, stealthy as rare moon flower,

he fills cache with fresh meat before dawn’s light.

Creator God, to you all creatures raise myriad voices united in praise.

both reynard and vixen’s instinctual love

is needed to nurture each furry fox child

they protectively watch for danger above

and lead kits outside when weather grows mild.

Creator God, to you all creatures raise myriad voices united in praise.

    Foxes are wonderful creatures… I especially love the arctic fox that is a rare sight and is not a threat to chickens.

    I’m very fond of foxes, although they have a bad reputation in the UK. Some are so friendly and have been known to visit for food, and bring their cubs to show them off.

    Such a lovely picture you paint of this fox family. I know we have foxes here, but I’ve never seen them. It was great to hear you read, too!

    Your delightful poem brought to mind our experience with foxes several years ago. On most of the balmy spring days of 2020, we enjoyed watching a mother fox and her three kits in our backyard. They’d come up out of the thicket and while mother stood watch, the young ones would run, jump, and pounce on one another. This was during Covid restrictions, so the diversion was all the more welcome. Their presence felt like a gift from God–just for our pleasure!

    I love this! Imagining those little fox pups, and proud and protective mama and papa.🥰
