Photo and prompt: Carpe Diem “Time Glass” #6 “Pine Tree”
( a tanka)
sunshine takes a hike
to mountaintop meadow of
fragrant wildflowers;
highlights lofty evergreens,
ancient monarchs reign from cliff.

the blood moon
is a woman;
she bleeds her
monthly tide
as proof of
her fertility;
she labors
through phases
add nausea-um
waxes gibbous
and convulses
with hot birth.
her heart aches
behind the
dark side of
loneliness;
a face that
no one sees.
her secret
sorrow is the
knowledge that
she’s only the
reflecting mirror
of manly sun’s glory.

My sons carved these pumpkins, which they dubbed
“Titan the Spartan” and “Halwarg, the Great Wolf”
(a triolet)
A Spartan helmet’s bravely plumed and always sharp his blade;
his courage in the face of death lives on in legends bold.
To track and kill a savage wolf would prove the man is made!
A Spartan helmet’s bravely plumed and always sharp his blade.
Thermopylae, where Persian wolves prevailed on Greeks betrayed;
in mountain pass spilled Spartan blood, war’s wind was howling cold.
A Spartan helmet’s bravely plumed and always sharp his blade,
his courage in the face of death lives on in legends bold!

we paste rags, dead leaves
on pathetic cut-paper wings
then tie them to our backs,
flap arms and hope like mad
to fly away from barren cliffs.
a dangerous fog of smug
self-sufficiency muddles
our minds and fills us with
secret, dark, well-founded
fears of crashing on rocks.
if we open our hearts and
minds to receive his Spirit
to dare believe in a Love
who is wiser and stronger
than us, to bow in humility
his face will shine through
thick fog, remove our fears
(except healthy fear of him)
fit us with love’s living wings
and raise our spirits to soar!

shiny power from
imagination’s station
bursts into dusty room
of beautifully tired mind;
ideas full-throttle steaming,
bells clang, lantern gleaming,
an archetypical locomotive
that sweeps any confusion
off flexing steel rails onto
sooty hardwood flooring;
while graceful barefoot
thoughts pose, entranced
by marvelous miniature
revelation which may
inspire fresh energy
for creativity; black
and white contrast
needs fleshing out,
expressed in muscular
tones of new dance steps,
art’s arabesque.
