Mid-life crisis is when you realize your body is not coming back.
Dementia will be when you realize your brain’s forgotten who you are.
By the time you think you have the answers, no one asks you the questions.
Rocking the boat may change direction of smooth sailing relation-ship.
We disagree to agree… it’s our modus operandi, you see.
“What kind of coffee is this?” he asks—“Jamaican Me Crazy”, she says.
Upon reaching speed limit, do we set cruise control…or step on it?!

if denied the warmth they yearn
rotisserie hearts predictably turn
enflaming selfish tongues to burn
glowing embers smolder & smoke
rising ashes threaten to choke
old conflagration easily stoke
innocents witness this ugly scene
wonder what white hot words may mean
soaking up pain of blame too keen
pour confessions’ water on flames
douse wildfire of relationship games
let forgiveness speak our new names

sweet little girl in lavender and pink
flashes a smile that charms her grandpa’s heart
petite and quick, she runs if you give chase
she hugs and kisses teddy bear named pooh
then plays toy tractors just like all the boys
her hair is long enough for two pigtails
if she will sit for mom to comb and tie
she pulls out every book from grandma’s shelf
opens each one and turns a page to read
if weather’s warm, let’s go for wagon ride
barn kitten jumps inside to come along
our happy farm girl laughs, waving her hands!

energetic blond boy invades our home
it’s so much fun the second time around
he dumps out all the legos on the floor
then drives his toy backhoe across the couch
he brings grandma another book to read
next climbs in grandpa’s lap to eat popcorn
his uncles he adores; follows footsteps
pulls on his boots (wrong feet) to go outdoors
he likes to chase the cats or moo at cows
he’s happy when he’s playing in the dirt
by day’s end we’re all ready for our beds
he reaches out to hug our necks goodnight!

color me clear claret to drink deep abiding joy
wash me free cerulean to keep fresh vision of purpose
paint me wild violaceous to sense passionate wonder
spray me glowing fuchsia to energize with enthusiasm
shade me warm goldenrod to exude grateful hope
draw me wheaten whey to nurture spirit of others
dye me gently ibis to find beauty in quietness
tint me steely silver to gather strength with age

In response to Abhra Pal’s first (and colorful) poetic prompt on d’Verse…
made me think of Paul Simon’s ’70s song, Kodachrome 🙂

flowing blond tresses, giggle;
bowing in unison to their
