how can
anyone
measure up
to this…
pure gold
diamond clear
rock solid
perfect standard?
only
when
flint hearts
are sparked by
agape love
and
mortal
flesh is
offered upon
the altar.

epiphany is said to be:
a piercing awareness or
sudden jolt of understanding.
gifted eastern magi journey
to kneel in worship before the king,
marked by phenomenal starlight.
family with innocent infant flees
far from joseph’s prophetic dreams
of violence marching in roman boots.
yet epiphany can also be gradual;
as the accumulated experiences of life
slowly dawn with obvious truth on the mind.
ancient words written and read,
processed in head, absorbed by heart,
over the years may ripen into wisdom.

In a frozen land
where temps dip
below nothing,
winds whip snow
across roads to
whirl into ditches
in wavy dunes,
it’s a comfort
to know that
somewhere…
the sky is hot
with flaming clouds
and burning colors,
heat waves rise
from soft asphalt
while the natives
and tourists sweat.

a cultural choice…
which way do we sway?
the demise of our language:
can “marriage” be “gay”?
the emperor in new clothes
parades down the street—
so we all must agree
public nudity’s sweet?
just ask a plumber
if connecting parts fit
or ask a dog breeder
if a pup comes from it!
it may seem archaic
for “family” to mean
a man and a woman
with children between;
it’s worked well for ages
and societies past…
but this new imitation,
how long will it last?
i’m only a poet,
i like words a lot;
and words must mean something
or what have we got?
if you want to have sex
with whomever you wish,
just don’t expect me
to say lovebirds are “fish”!

since today is a holiday
and the weekend is coming…
i’ll start a new diet on Monday.
a cold wind blows outside
and the treadmill is covered…
so think i’ll go running on Monday.
there are after-holiday sales
and new year’s advertisers…
i’ll balance the budget on Monday.
i want to visit the neighbors
and spend time with my friends…
guess i’ll call somebody on Monday.
so many books to be read and
ideas for poems to be written…
hope i feel inspired on Monday!

human soul
holds a fire
lit by the
master chandler
who forms us
of soft wax
and then
illuminates
our spirits
with his own
brilliant
LIGHT.
Each
flame flickers
brightly, bravely
through the
long, dark
night as we
push away
fear’s shadows,
wick up hope,
burn with
holy joy,
melt to
LOVE.
