reasons to linger

what’s sweeter than a yellow pear

dripping ripeness, with a wedge of cheese?

what’s sweeter than a sleepy kiss

enfolding lovers with a warm embrace?

what’s sweeter than a baby’s toothless smile

dimpling cheeks with responsive coos?

maleficent (I)

no sleeping beauty, she’s an
(un)fairy, frightful villainess
come back in black; horned,
winged, pale with hungering

what do you offer to appease?
appeal? tease? or try to deal?
a cupcake?! O, she’s no mousy
muffin that you’d be stuffin’!

whip up a delicacy for those
cynical red lips, a mouth that
purses when speaking curses;
bake over coals of tongued fire,
in thick forest of thorny briar

rich, dark chocolate cake–it’s
devil’s food; a true-love’s kiss
baked inside, laced with poison;
white-frosted, too-sweet icing

serve at dawn as darkness dies

rise!

disciples and Jesus
share passover meal
Judas betrays him—
kiss seals the deal

arrested, on trial
in kangaroo court
soldiers spit, hit,
crown him for sport

Pilate denies
hate crucifies
Messiah dies

tomb found empty
wondrous surprise
because he lives
we, too, will rise!

The day after Resurrection Sunday and linking a quadrille (44 words) for dVerse prompt using the word “rise”.

in grandma’s eyes

Dear Babyface,
birthed by God’s grace;
let me hold you, kiss you, squeeze you,
while you’re sleeping, let me tease you:
misshapen head and wrinkly skin,
you sport a double…no, triple chin!
your pudgy nose is slightly pimpled,
your chubby cheeks are sweetly dimpled.
I admire all I see ‘cuz, Babyface,
you look like me!

I submitted this poem to Lyrical Iowa last year. It received 3rd Place in the “humorous verse” category and was published in their 2018 collection. Linking to dVerse Poets where Lillian hosts Open Link Night with “Ah, sweet youth” theme.

Although

it may seem

customary for

a girl to prefer

a dozen roses,

he decided to

defy tradition

by offering her

a lovely chain

of fresh daisies.

His unique gift

gently struck

a heart’s chord

which brought

forward a burst

of affection as

she stepped

close enough

to exchange a

petaled kiss.
