sleepless lullaby

rock-a-bye baby in mother’s womb
how could you know it would become tomb?
life sacrificed for your mama’s choice
shouldn’t unborn women be given a voice?

abortion hurts mothers, it’s medical rape
dishonors the body’s natural landscape
increases breast cancer, depression, and grief
with memory haunted by pregnancy brief

unbridled abortion comes at high cost
sixty-three million lives have been lost
planned parenthood is a business of blood
fresh baby-parts market with organs to flood

we must do better in land of the free
abortion for life of the mother might be
but killing our offspring seems uncivilized
the life of each person be precious and prized!

_____________

The practice of abortion is shrouded with euphemisms but let’s reconsider the harsh reality. Can you sing this without gagging? (tune of “Rock-a-bye Baby”).

reasons to linger

what’s sweeter than a yellow pear

dripping ripeness, with a wedge of cheese?

what’s sweeter than a sleepy kiss

enfolding lovers with a warm embrace?

what’s sweeter than a baby’s toothless smile

dimpling cheeks with responsive coos?

in grandma’s eyes

Dear Babyface,
birthed by God’s grace;
let me hold you, kiss you, squeeze you,
while you’re sleeping, let me tease you:
misshapen head and wrinkly skin,
you sport a double…no, triple chin!
your pudgy nose is slightly pimpled,
your chubby cheeks are sweetly dimpled.
I admire all I see ‘cuz, Babyface,
you look like me!

I submitted this poem to Lyrical Iowa last year. It received 3rd Place in the “humorous verse” category and was published in their 2018 collection. Linking to dVerse Poets where Lillian hosts Open Link Night with “Ah, sweet youth” theme.

her liquid eyes deeper than sky of blue

she follows and reflects emotions true

with roundly curving cheeks and hair so fair

dear granddaughter, we’re all in love with you!

starlight burns

unusual brightness

For God, who said,”Let light shine out of darkness”, has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.                                                                   2 Corinthians 4:6

a lil’ rhyme

The moon shines bright

upon this night

such pretty sight

for us to peep.

The full moon’s light

makes clouds take flight

outshines starlight

comfort we keep.

The moon’s far height

angels’ nightlight

please do not fight

just go to sleep!
