got dermatitis?
please don’t do anything rash
if you feel an itch
avoid embarrassment of
acting flaky when face turns red!

yes, i remember fondly my first hat
white straw with strap on chin and blue ribbon
with lacy gloves on church bench there i sat
clean folded hankie was Easter sermon.
my father had lieutenant’s naval cap
we played with it as kids in neighborhood
whoever wore the hat commanded map
and others followed orders as they should.
now that i’m older, friends go out in style
we dress in purple bling, red hats feathered
when we appear, we usually bring a smile
we laugh and learn to love life well-weathered.
reveal under my hat, mind’s mystery

yes, growing older
but not “elderly” yet
in fact, feeling bolder
with new friends i’ve met
make statement of fashion
wearing purple and red
deep colors of passion
circle hats upon heads
fun club for ten lassies
monthly travels around
visit places quite classy
while laughter abounds
we live and we learn
shop & dine as an art
the education we earn
keeps brain cells smart
if you see us round town
please give us a smile
we’re the happy red hatters
“live-out-loud” is our style!

Linking this ghazal to February “red crush” prompt HERE. The ghazal is a traditional Arabian verse form with the first two lines ending in the same refrain, which is then repeated at the end of each stanza. The ghazal consists of at least five, but often up to fifteen, two-line stanzas. Each stanza should be independent, but should tie together with the whole. The final stanza is a signature, where the author can use his/her name to seal the poem.The lines should be of similar length and rhythm. Themes are traditionally on love’s longing and directed to the Beloved. (Note: With subjects like romantic love, many of us tell ourselves pretty stories…this may be one such “confabulation”).

Write sweet poetry to heart’s secret red crush;
can mere words awaken love’s latent red crush?
pluck ripe pomegranates from leafy tree lush;
cut fruit in two, reveal cherished red crush.
rose petaled kisses may entice lovers’ hush,
romancing soft velvet of luscious red crush.
delight of the garden in Persia and Cush,
heaven’s seeds float serene in pulpy red crush.
massage scented cream on skin’s passionate blush;
circle neck with bright garnets of jeweled red crush.
freshly squeezed pom juice powers energy rush;
whether iced or served hot, savor flavor’s red crush
Valentine birthday doubles married love’s mush…
desires’ conversation with lynn’s only red crush 😉

wrens did not return
youngest son built new birdhouse
our hearts are frozen
and the sound of birds is heard…
late wrens sit in bush
life is more than building nests
sing little hearts out

learned to drive
stick, clutch & shift
four on the floor in
’68 red VW beetle;
rear engine unwinds
like tight rubber band.
scootin’ thru traffic and
parkin’ in small slots or
doin’ donuts on icy lots.
Daddy gave her keys
not knowing that
the girlfriends had
too much fun trying
to get boys to follow,
then losing them…
beep, beep!
