my father has been gone exactly a year today and the memories of his dying taste like chalk on a parched tongue… but the memories of his living smell like mountain trout, burnt cream puffs, chlorine of pool where he saved me from drowning.

i painted our basement a lucious “oyster shoal” such neutral hue embued between cloud and coal idyllic muted color match to old grey mare’s fair foal if i fall into a swoon, know the fumes have taken toll as paint chip covers wall in opalescent oyster shoal!

it’s world poetry day but you probably won’t read it in the newspapers poems aren’t news any- more than recipes are novels but why not? publish a peace poem on front page of today’s issue with bold print, yell “extra, read all about it!”
yes, i remember fondly my first hat white straw with strap on chin and blue ribbon with lacy gloves on church bench there i sat clean folded hankie was Easter sermon.
my father had lieutenant’s naval cap we played with it as kids in neighborhood whoever wore the hat commanded map and others followed orders as they should.
now that i’m older, friends go out in style we dress in purple bling, red hats feathered when we appear, we usually bring a smile we laugh and learn to love life well-weathered.
