judge book by (dust) cover

Melissa challenges dVerse poets to write to a quote from one of Leo Tostoy’s books

ancient dust thickly lies…
obscures discarded objects
personal mysteries unsolved
hidden in dark attic of soul

what is this discovery?!
favorite forgotten pillow
stuffing needs fluffing…
still choke on puffed pride

look in that corner box
something small, hidden
away…yuck! dead mouse
of musty, moldy pettiness

keep cherished photographs
of loved ones’ kindness but
let dirty dogged memories
lie sleeping and undisturbed

_______

(alternative title: pride & pettiness, but that’s another author)

negative white space

margin is not
a blizzard of words
obfuscating page’s landscape
with directionally-challenged winds

margin is not
some narcissistic lover
manipulating poor gas-lit partner
into unconditional surrender

margin is not
an adrenaline addict
over-crowding calendar squares
with meaningless engagements

margin is not
an anxious mind
fretting over fearful rhetoric
contrary to obvious truth

margin is not
a malnourished soul
scrolling electronic junkfood
with no appetite for beauty

margin is spacious living and gracious loving .

fatal question

i must radiate
from cool core soul
like blue mud ball of heavy
clay saturated then evaporated into wet
rings rippling outward with smooth swirling moves that break through purple
barrier of fearful insecurities
with unique inner energy ignited by spirit’s heat. which pulsates bright music
of love and creativity to touch and enhance other lives with beauty and joy!

Alma Thomas, The Eclipse (1970), Smithsonian American Art Museum.

quiet time alone

listen to your soul
alone is not loneliness
but self-connection
we all need time to process
life’s challenges and trauma

smoke & mirror

mirror, mirror, on the wall
could make fools of us all

walking past, we catch a glance
practice pomp and circumstance

if glass surface’s too reflective
naked soul knows we’re defective

we see ourselves, then look away
don’t focus on our faults today

mirror fogs with each warm breath
face clear truth before cold death

scripture’s gracious mirror heed
words of life are what we need

be not afraid to look in mirror
for hellish smoke is to be feared

because i am

Gitanjali, Song Offerings sounds amazing but can you bring it back to its essential meaning and create a haiku with it? That’s the goal for Carpe Diem’s weekend distillation…

The time that my journey takes is long and the way of it long.
I came out on the chariot of the first gleam of light,
and pursued my voyage through the wildernesses of worlds
leaving my track on many a star and planet.
It is the most distant course that comes nearest to thyself,
and that training is the most intricate which leads to the utter simplicity of a tune.
The traveller has to knock at every alien door to come to his own,
and one has to wander through all the outer worlds to reach
the innermost shrine at the end.
My eyes strayed far and wide before
I shut them and said `Here art thou!’
The question and the cry `Oh, where?’ melt into tears of a thousand streams
and deluge the world with the flood of the assurance `I am!’

© Rabindranath Tagore (taken from “Gitanjali”)

my distillation haiku:

inner universe
who comprehends one’s own soul?
recognition’s tears

and i add 2 lines for tanka:

find identity in God
Creator, greater “I AM”

mortal immortality

And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.   -Genesis 2:7  (KJV)

the soul

is a spark

is a flicker

is a flame

lit by holy fire

fanned by living breath

exhaled into existence

encoded in DNA

embodied in flesh

enveloped in love

to live

to learn

to laugh

to lament

until death separates.

never extinguished

ever released

to an eternity of life’s choice:

with or without the Keeper of souls.
