La via dolorosa
the way of suffering
tell me, Who would
choose to suffer?
Plenty of suffering
here to go around:
pain, grief
rejection, loneliness
bullying, abuse
derision, disease, death.
None of us immune
all of us sinners
except the immutable Son of man.
He chose the via dolorosa
only he could
only he would
bear all our misery and loss
on rough wooden beams of
a Roman cross:
ugly method of torture
cruel means of execution
for common criminals.
What crime deserved piercing?
His uncommon love for us
pierced his magnanimous heart
spilled gracious agape love
to wash our dirt clean away…
His via dolorosa is
our way home to the Father,
who turned away from
our hideous sins
borne on the bleeding back
of his beloved son.
Shadows fell on his
forsaken and disfigured form
when he descended into hell
Praise God, now we will never be forsaken
we need not smell the sulphur or feel the heat.
Let us kiss the nail printed feet
of our Redeemer – Rescuer
who walked the cobbled streets
of the via dolorosa uphill to Calvary.

olive trees by Van Gogh
mediterranean sun
pulsing rhythm
warm yellow sky
radiates, ripens
music of olives
leaves quiver
trees wave arms
trunks sway hips
shadows of oil
flow to sound
of cool blue
pyrenees bass

“Amuse me!” is fair theme at dVerse poets with Lillian spinning our memories.
calliope music
summer sunburn
sticky cotton candy
magical carousel ride
double-decked imagination
a young girl’s fantasy choice:
to trade precious tickets for
high-kickin’ striped zebra,
long-legged white hare
or sleek blue dolphin?
climb in saddle!

someday
i’ll meet
God
on a
mountain
or beach
maybe at a
coffee shop and
we’ll instantly
recognize each other
with neck hugs
and back pats
then, awed
i will bow
low and
God will
smile grace,
reach down,
pick me up
and put me in
his shirt pocket
near his heart
to carry
me
home.

prime manhood pressed
slender, young and brave
army air force wwII battalion
brought down near new guinea
their one son and only child
lies still in forest lawn

My father’s cousin, Vernon, son of Ben & Hilda of Bellflower CA; whose name I discovered on a memorial wall in the Veteran’s Museum of Branson MO.

shift angle of prism
to see full spectrum of light
adjust focus of camera
to zoom in clear reality
turn dial on radio
to tune in magnificent music
leave childish stubbornness, embrace childlike wonder
leave small expectations, embrace great expectancy
whatever you stand to lose
is already lost to your control
let go of whatever it is
you’re holding with tight grip
open the clenched fist
to receive grace with open hand

Light a candle on this Christmas Day
We watch with eyes wide open.
What does a shepherd know of Light?
Messiah behold
Let all nations be told
All: The Christ child has given us LIGHT!

Light a candle on this 4th Sunday of Advent
We watch with eyes wide open.
What does a shepherd know of Peace?
God’s comforting word
in dark valley still heard
All: Since Christ is our Advent of PEACE!

“You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace;
the mountains and hills will burst into song before you,
and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.” –Isaiah 55:12
Everyone lives in a little town
obscure village, speck in space
lost in universe we are but dust
Creator sees, our father knows
us too intimately, enters a virgin
(god in a womb) angels sing glory!
He came and is coming still to
every little town, knocks at door
will you let great JOY move… inn?

Hanging out at dVerse Poets Pub with Lillian’s theme: It’s all in the timing…
freight train slows slightly
unmarked crossing ahead
pick-up driver approaches
eyes on cellular de-vice
engineer lays on horn:
whaaaaaa – whaa – whaa!
conductor squirms/gasps
“We’re gonna hit him!”
“Whaaaaat?!”
oh deer! in headlights stare
driver brakes in nick of time
dull thunk… huge iron horse
deflects truck like a pop can
spins away from death’s rails
truck and driver leaking fluid.

Light a candle on this 3rd Sunday of Advent
We watch with eyes wide open.
What does a shepherd know of Joy?
Exiles follow Lord
Until kingdom restored
All: So Christ is our Advent of JOY!
