When i began this blog 5 Mays ago, i did not realize today is designated annual “Poem in Your Pocket Day” by The League of Canadian Poets and Academy of American Poets! How cool is that? Here’s a pocket-sized poem for the occasion.
a fresh poem
home-grown in
fertile loam of
heart’s dark tome
let thoughts roam
new ideas phloem
seeded, weeded, and
(hopefully) read(ed)
whether new haiku
or favorite sonnet
remember
to carry a
poem in
your pocket!

someday
i’ll meet
God
on a
mountain
or beach
maybe at a
coffee shop and
we’ll instantly
recognize each other
with neck hugs
and back pats
then, awed
i will bow
low and
God will
smile grace,
reach down,
pick me up
and put me in
his shirt pocket
near his heart
to carry
me
home.

how to sink a
quadrille on “cue”?
first, eat plate of
tangy pork BBQ
at local pub
called “The Cue”
then, chalk up
tip of cue
call a pocket
sight level aim
at cue ball
in pool hall
take center stage
right on cue!
Linking to “quadrille Monday” at dVerse Poets with De. I already voted but may need diversion from the hotly-contested election today! Hope to read others’ poetry…

bitterness weighs
like smooth stone
in a deep pocket,
turned over and
over and over, worn
by the long fingers
of hurtful memories;
familiar, uncomfortable
too full of mean-ing.
choose to limp
with lumpy baggage
or let forgiveness
reach firmly into
heart’s hidden folds,
remove hard burden
and fling it far,
leaving space
for lighter grace.

A little limerick in honor of Poem in My Pocket Day…when I titled my blog, almost three years ago, I did not know it was a “national” holiday!
I carry a poem in my pocket
Obsession eccentric – don’t knock it!
May I read it aloud?
Make dead poets proud
If you enjoy versing, let’s rock it!
