mariner’s musings

when warmer air stirs sweet memories on
those youthful days when he sailed waves of sea
feeling of freedom worth dreaming upon

he watched the sky in experienced way
and listened for foghorn’s woeful low sound
to safely guide ship back into the bay

love of the sea understood beyond speech
lives on after old sailor’s laid to rest
like signal of lighthouse on rocky beach

celtic music

Irish folk music featured at Carpe Diem Haiku Kai. This song was produced a few years ago by a Celtic band, Eden’s Bridge, and sung by Sarah Lacey.

seek a shiny stone

gaze down, collect in pocket

miss glory of the sea

renga with basho

Carpe Diem Haiku Kai’s ”Renga Challenge” create a renga with haiku by Basho.

rainy season

sea glow lights held up

by the night watchman

pale koi bubble to surface

paddle junk into harbor

the blue sea

in waves smelling of saké

tonight’s full moon

sitting with friend on the beach

quietly sip from warm cup

on a bare branch

a crow settled down

autumn evening

vermillion koyo fallen

colors faded with sunset

dynamics of yin & yang

Meoto Iwa, or the “Loved one and loved one” Rocks, are a couple of small rocky stacks in the sea off Futami, Mie, Japan. They are joined by a shimenawa (a heavy rope of rice straw) and celebrate the union in marriage of man and woman. At low tide, the rocks are not separated by water.

Chèvrefeuille, at CDHK, offers two haiku for weekend “fusion & troiku” challenge:

between the wedded rocks

the sun rises to her highest throne

summer solstice

mountain stream

the ice has melted – dances in the sun

crystal waterdrops                                                                                   © Chèvrefeuille

My “fusion” of Chèvre’s haiku into one which lays foundation for troiku series:

rock solid marriage

mountain streams refresh the sea

sun rises, moon sets

rock solid marriage

united by rope of straw

weighty promises

mountain streams refresh

sea waves break upon the rocks

crystal droplets shine

sunset and moonrise

benediction over earth

until end of time

castaway

my footsteps

the heart

move over, edward lear

Mastodon and pussycat went to sea

in a canoe without any oars.

Said Mastodon to Kitty, “Isn’t it pretty,

this mirrored reflection of stars?”

Replied puss to pachyderm,

“Move a little astern, your trunk

is blocking my view.”

So he took a step back but,

alas and alack! stars scattered

as boat tipped in deep blue…

…which may be why mastodons are extinct and cats hate water 😉
