quiet word

How to give thanks with chaos in the world, breakdown in the family? Death and violence, divorce and mental illness, “us against them” polarization… good humor is hard to come by when life feels like a tragedy. We search for stability, a grounding.

Where is God when needed? Seems too high and mighty above our fractiousness. Is he deaf to his creatures’ pitiful whimpers and loud tantrums alike? Disillusioned with ancient oracles of dead prophets, we grasp for meaning.

In dusky silence, a singular sunset leisurely paints the sky above fields of round cornstalk bales. Hot pink and purple hues deepen, clouds set on fire, eyes cannot resist, breath catches at heavenly drama. Radio plays song, When You Speak* and inexplicable peace envelops my soul.

moonrise to sunset
skies shimmer with his glory
give us thankful hearts

Join Frank J. Tassone and dVerse poets who are serving haibuns and giving thanks this week. Reference to song by Jeremy Camp heard on K-LOVE.

dear guest

don’t be upset by
my russet setter
on the side porch;
step over him and

please, have a seat
on my satin settee
here we’ll have tea,
chat, recite verset till

supper; then play
games after sunset
until we settle into
long moonset night.

boondocker sticker shock

Renga series linked to weekend challenge at Carpe Diem Haiku Kai

among dune grass
silver bleached logs
and a perfect day

we gather sticks for campfire
share stories of desert lore

desert sunset
cholla cactus sticks
to the light

gaze on painted desert sky
day ends in glorious flames

desert ways
branching all over
cholla cactus

slowly spreads across landscape
thick barrier to hikers

alone and asking
to be touched
teddy bear cholla

appears to be cuddly (not)
waits to stick barbs into you

overcoming rocks
a stream of cacti
slowly spreading

pieces fall to ground and sprout
sink roots down in desert sand

writing
desert poems
pencil cholla

words jump sharply like cactus
hope to make impressive point

dynamics of yin & yang

Meoto Iwa, or the “Loved one and loved one” Rocks, are a couple of small rocky stacks in the sea off Futami, Mie, Japan. They are joined by a shimenawa (a heavy rope of rice straw) and celebrate the union in marriage of man and woman. At low tide, the rocks are not separated by water.

Chèvrefeuille, at CDHK, offers two haiku for weekend “fusion & troiku” challenge:

between the wedded rocks

the sun rises to her highest throne

summer solstice

mountain stream

the ice has melted – dances in the sun

crystal waterdrops                                                                                   © Chèvrefeuille

My “fusion” of Chèvre’s haiku into one which lays foundation for troiku series:

mountain streams refresh the sea
