by grace alone

Mayflower II on the Open Seas by Montague Dawson

boatload of faith
puritans flee persecution
embark for freedom to worship

bible believers,
soldiers, profit seekers
travel together in tight quarters

illness on board
violent storms at sea
God’s providence holds fast

birth of child on
vast ocean of hope
blessing for future colony

Another quadrille about the pilgrims; written second but prequels my first…

wait for squeals

Happiness is…

mittens to wear
in crisp fall air

take off your shoes
(eschew bad news)

caterpillars wiggle
as grandkids giggle

jumping bean
on a trampoline

funny fun is the goal
as we slip, trip, and roll

bouncing  past

into,

over

siblings and cousins.

A photo and quadrille of 44 words for dVerse poets on “sky” theme…

i desire to be
a prisoner of hope
captivated by love

learning to surrender
to ultimate good will;

transformed, renewed,
impassioned and freed

to serve, unreservedly, as
we await full redemption

when Jesus, our glorious
hope, returns in blazing
sky with power to reign!

“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. “

(Romans 5:1 & 2 NIV)

remember me

Joining Victoria Slotto and dVerse poets in the garden…

robin dips in birdbath

tiller turns black loam
to plant potatoes early

sugar-snap peas on fence
deep red geraniums in pots

pick peppers and ripest
tomatoes for pint jars
of homemade salsa

memories embedded in
rubber palm, fabric back
of mom’s garden gloves

da bomb

blue lips confess

tasting frozen delight

hyperactivity on a stick

fructose corn syrup high

flavors layered like the flag

cherry, lime, jazzy razzberry

hot july day at grandma’s

you know you want one

let taste buds explode

sweetness trickles in

cool

drips

off

chin

i did!

Lillian invites us to lighten up and get a bit silly at dVerse poets’ pub tonight 🙂

did you ever leave cell phone behind,
family must ring your number to find?

did you ever blow gum bubble in space,
stretch it bigger till it burst in your face?

did you ever play three gruff goats billy,
game with granddaughters giggling silly?

close/open

when restaurants close,
drive throughs open double lanes
to serve safely.

when schools close,
teachers open online rooms
to teach remotely.

when surgical centers close,
hospital personnel open doors
to care courageously.

when church buildings close,
God’s people open united hearts
to pray faithfully.

just peelings

peelings, nothing more than peelings
trying to remember apple peelings of life
teardrops rolling down on my cheeks
trying to forget onion peelings in sink…

woo-oo, peel potato in my hands
slip like never lost u
slide like never leave u
again in garden…

My apologies to songwriter Morris Albert who wrote 1975 hit, “Feelings”.  I’m linking this to dVerse quadrille prompt on “peelings”  🙂

urbane

hey man, whatsup?
’tis the season to glow

hustlers glitter under streetlight
like shards of broken window
neon sign blinks cheap hotel

alley cats’ eyes flicker between
garbage dumpsters in row
yowling fight over dead fish

it’s Christmas eve, yeah
sell me some snow!

Linking with dVerse poets where Lillian hosts a “glowing” quadrille…

play for keeps

keep the best memories
let unpleasant ones go

keep faith in truth
turn from all false-ness

keep forward movement
stop procrastination now

keep expressing your heart
ignore rude criticism

keep head held high
don’t lose confidence

keep smiling at life
watch life smile back!

Too late to link but inspired by Kim at dVerse to write quadrille (44 words) on “keep”.

dear guest

don’t be upset by
my russet setter
on the side porch;
step over him and

please, have a seat
on my satin settee
here we’ll have tea,
chat, recite verset till

supper; then play
games after sunset
until we settle into
long moonset night.

sea of tranquility

Lillian at dVerse invites us to write a quadrille (44-word poem) on the most beautiful word in our language: tranquility

adirondacks sit on
porch of beach house
surf flows in, lightly froths
foam over fine sand…
sucked back to sea,
leaving castaway shells.
seagulls perch on pier…
launch upward in lazy arcs
where white clouds float,
billow, accumulate into
tranquil dreams…
of sunny tomorrow.
