And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. -Genesis 2:7 (KJV)
the soul
is a spark
is a flicker
is a flame
lit by holy fire
fanned by living breath
exhaled into existence
encoded in DNA
embodied in flesh
enveloped in love
to live
to learn
to laugh
to lament
until death separates.
never extinguished
ever released
to an eternity of life’s choice:
with or without the Keeper of souls.

Wrote this “grey haibun” to share at dVerse Poets pub…
A mist of grey grief hangs over us all. Roll call of promising youth, senselessly gunned down before their prime, grows irreversibly longer even as numbers of disconnected, angry youth swell precipitously. Education leaves God out, letting demons in.
Hate disrespects human dignity. Rage destroys human life. Violence disregards meaning of community. Selfishness and rudeness rule (un)social media. We refuse to walk in the life-giving Light; choosing to crawl into the darkness of our own souls.
The civilization of Man is graying fast. Without fear of God, we will fear each other. Beauty of human culture fades. We follow a suicidal path and wonder how to write our own obituary.

God is the potter

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

Red as sunrise before looming storm
Orange as gopher wood bark inside ark
Yellow as fierce eyes of boarding panthers
Green as wild foamy breakers of floodwaters
Blue as heavens after dark rainclouds clear
Indigo as robe of Noah, kneeling by altar
Violet as passion of God’s forever promise
I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. (Genesis 9:13)

Sharing with dVerse…fits earlier prompts for list poem and sensory play.
hope smells
like fresh petrichor
of welcome spring rain
hope tastes
like first juicy tomato
of sun-ripened summer
hope sounds
like migration call
of swan o’er autumn field
hope feels
like flickering flame
of log in winter hearth
For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

greek word “agape”
God’s unconditional love
reaches for rebels
he humbly disrobed
to wash Judas’ dirty feet
king assumed servant role
he lay down own life
to pay ransom for captives
sweat pressed in garden
Jesus’ sacrifice
blood shed on altar for sin
perfect Lamb of God
remembering him
my first love, true love, best love
sing with gratitude

joyful
river of
liquid glass
crystal clear
stream of
perpetual
living water
flows, grows
ever deeper
cleansing
quenching
refreshing
as peace
passing
through
the new
jerusalem
eternal city
of God’s
kingdom
and our
forever
home

“You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace;
the mountains and hills will burst into song before you,
and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.” –Isaiah 55:12
Everyone lives in a little town
obscure village, speck in space
lost in universe we are but dust
Creator sees, our father knows
us too intimately, enters a virgin
(god in a womb) angels sing glory!
He came and is coming still to
every little town, knocks at door
will you let great JOY move… inn?

Prayer in “quadrille” form, exactly forty-four words…link to dVerse Poets
Open my hands
to receive extravagant grace
Open my ears
to hear shepherd’s voice
Open my eyes
to see beauty of narrow way
Open my mind
to know transforming truth
Open my mouth
to speak words of hope
Open my heart
to love courageously.
Jesus spoke “Ephphatha!” to deaf/mute man (see Mark 7:31-37)
