crumbling lady edifices crucifix

Dark-vowelled smoking columns aspire ruin

as dust-tongued, forested roof caves innavely;

water-spoken island surrenders to timbers

of flamed and lillified heaven-circling pyre.

Aghast of tragedy, fire-dwarfed gargoyles are

hearting a tear-culled Paris in hymnally tone

to dignify bell-voiced ash of towering ages;

above rubble, The King’s cross, power-gilded stands.

imagine

it’s easy to imagine a snug log cabin in the woods
when you’re sipping tea on a quiet snowy day

it’s easy to imagine a cruise to a tropical island
when you’re trying on a pair of glamorous sunglasses

it’s easy to imagine hiking up a clear mountain trail
when you’re climbing stairs with another load of laundry

it’s easy to imagine lying on a private sandy beach
when you’re painting the house in hot summer sun

it’s easy to imagine speaking wisdom into the world
when you’re silent because you think no one is listening

this is NOT a drill (2)

Celebration vacation
on an island paradise
interrupted by cellphone alert:

“incoming missile, seek shelter, this is not a drill.”

This is not funny; nowhere to hide
surrounded by pacific (?!) ocean
hold down panic, prepare for end:

finish make-up, style wet hair, choose the shoes.

Say urgent prayer for
interception; resort reception is
too busy helping people check in…

wonder if soon we all be checking out?

Counting down final few minutes,
text message of love and faith
to adult children at home:

“God holds us all in His loving hands.”

Sense calming peace, sit by spouse
watching news update of human error
that pressed false alarm

sigh wave of relief, grateful to live another day!

Oh,

look at

that!

He posted photos

on facebook AGAIN

of their most recent

exotic VACATION…

some tropical island

resort, of course.

They’re always

FLYING off together;

and they’re NOT

even married!  No,

they’re too YOUNG

(and foolish) yet…

Peter and Wendy,

WHERE do they

get the money?

The time, well…

THAT they seem

to have plenty of;

those two will

never-never

NEVER

grow

up!

Link with d’Verse and Claudia’s “magical” prompt of having a book character show up in your poem…

driftwood

–dedicated to my brother, Dale, who is a safe harbor

“i am an island!” he declared,

staking his flag in the sand;

she shook her head laughing,

“how so?” but she already

understood his answers.

other shores beckoned her

yet he seemed content to

stay, digging in soft sands;

she paddled to a far harbor

uncertain when she’d return.

aren’t we all little islands?

“i mean, you’re there and i’m

here with an ocean of words

between us”…not to mention

thoughts, plans and dreams.

always creating ripples in

concentric circles, our ever-

widening waves roll outward

to crash in foamy surf upon

others’ glistening shores.

“why not leave your island?”

she urged but he insisted that

he liked his own beach view;

so we keep paddling rowboats

to reach each other’s worlds.

in space between, we send sea gulls and

glass bottles carrying messages of love.
