man’s wisdom

De invites us to post a quick quadrille at dVerse poets pub

__________

we dabble in exploration,

attempting to map what we’ve

experienced of the wide world

but, like pre-Columbian charts

before discovery of a new world,

our lines meander meaninglessly

and our foolish cartography needs

drastic revision upon further research

and confirmation of actual reality

retired (or just tired)

Thank God for retirement! People may think the idea unbiblical but I disagree. God told Moses that priests should serve from age 25-50 and then retire.* They could help the younger priests after that. Of course, you don’t quit working; just quit working full-time and do what you can to help the next generation(s). You are free from the pressure to perform!

You must earn this stage of life and then you can reap the blessings of age. It’s hard for many to have enough to live on in later years because none of us know how long we’ll live so what is “enough”? It may be elusive but what a grand concept…to finally make time for the things you really want to do. Travel, exercise, volunteer, pray, read, spend time with spouse, visit friends, enjoy grandchildren, try hobbies, write poetry!

Growing older is not for the faint of heart, especially as the heart may faint. Body parts give out and may need repair or replacement but there’s no real cure for aging. You may even reach invisibility…people no longer pay attention to you which can be frustrating because you finally have the wisdom of experience! Yet now you are free to be you without worrying what other people think…except you want to be a better example to the youngsters.

to quote my dear aunt,

“aging is not for wimps”

travel down new roads

all must die

“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12

note gray hairs
another wrinkle
an ache in bones
or problems with
private plumbing

forget a name or
why (oh why?) you
came into the room
then go back again
to seek missing key

the key to wisdom:
remember you die
but why (oh why)?
death comes by sin
it’s without & within

fear of death and
God’s wrath; we
deserve both yet
He bore worst of
both for you, me

believe in Son
sent from the One
in whom justice
and mercy meet;
our Father & home

Inspired by sermon on Psalm 90 today by Pastor John Lee.

imagine

it’s easy to imagine a snug log cabin in the woods
when you’re sipping tea on a quiet snowy day

it’s easy to imagine a cruise to a tropical island
when you’re trying on a pair of glamorous sunglasses

it’s easy to imagine hiking up a clear mountain trail
when you’re climbing stairs with another load of laundry

it’s easy to imagine lying on a private sandy beach
when you’re painting the house in hot summer sun

it’s easy to imagine speaking wisdom into the world
when you’re silent because you think no one is listening

why look back?

reformed quote #2

3 Day/3 Quote Challenge:  People celebrate Halloween but many have forgotten that October 31 is Reformation Day for the Church.  So I will post a series of quotes by Protestant Reformers.  Let’s try on their “thinking caps”!
