man knows not his,
yet, by tracking time,
we try to master it.
shadows on sundials,
changing of calendars,
watching the clocks.
time is cosmic order:
spheres circling suns
moons orbiting planets.
from cradle to grave,
out of crib into coffin,
time carries us away.
memories of childhood,
youth’s fond dreams, our
strength and beauty fade.
we cannot stop time
but perhaps we can
slow it by sabbath;
pause to pray, praise
give thanks for grace,
we rest, he restores!

With my sincere apologies to the venerable Jane Austen,
but it seems that “Colonel” James Bond is planning nuptials!
pretend, deny it,
you know everybody talks,
i heard of it in town.
my dear, upon my honour,
i met Colonel Bond and
he told me of it directly.
you surprise me,
surely must be
mistaken intelligence;
even if true…not what
i expect Colonel B. to do.
but, i assure you,
it so happened.
when he began talking
of one thing and another,
i said: so, Colonel,
i hear word (you) are
going to be married,
is it true?
and what did the Colonel say?
oh, he did say it certain…
i declare! Mr. B. is well, i hope?
oh, quite well and
uncommonly charming;
it is a pity he should be
so in love with your sister.
you may tell your sister she
is a monstrous girl to get him.
upon my honour,
nothing can be good
enough for her, i assure you!

bare hillside from
the verdant jordan
river valley below,
two young disciples
find a stark white,
solitary statue atop
hill’s rocky terrain;
life-sized figure of
robed, middle-age
woman forever
paused mid-stride,
glancing regretfully
over her shoulder
pilgrims, startled by chance find,
circle her with low murmurs
“this is simply amazing, who knew?”
“such realistic details, sculpted by a master!”
“must be ancient yet so well-preserved”
one hiker touches lone pillar’s arm
and inspects grains rubbed off
“hmmm, smells like sulphur and tastes like salt”
companion blanches at sudden realization,
a discovery of biblical proportions.

it was the hot summer of ’59
the heat dragged on and on;
migrants sweated in the fields,
youth rumbled in parking lots
after cruising’ saturday night.
bobby left me for a prettier girl
but i didn’t care; i’d have a
smoke, quick slick a rat tail
comb thru my cropped hair
and find me a better boy,
one who really understood
what was inside me, yeah.
