Carpe Diem Haiku Kai’s ”Renga Challenge” create a renga with haiku by Basho.
rainy season
sea glow lights held up
by the night watchman
pale koi bubble to surface
paddle junk into harbor
the blue sea
in waves smelling of saké
tonight’s full moon
sitting with friend on the beach
quietly sip from warm cup
on a bare branch
a crow settled down
autumn evening
vermillion koyo fallen
colors faded with sunset

Meoto Iwa, or the “Loved one and loved one” Rocks, are a couple of small rocky stacks in the sea off Futami, Mie, Japan. They are joined by a shimenawa (a heavy rope of rice straw) and celebrate the union in marriage of man and woman. At low tide, the rocks are not separated by water.
Chèvrefeuille, at CDHK, offers two haiku for weekend “fusion & troiku” challenge:
between the wedded rocks
the sun rises to her highest throne
summer solstice
mountain stream
the ice has melted – dances in the sun
crystal waterdrops © Chèvrefeuille
My “fusion” of Chèvre’s haiku into one which lays foundation for troiku series:
rock solid marriage
mountain streams refresh the sea
sun rises, moon sets

rock solid marriage
united by rope of straw
weighty promises
mountain streams refresh
sea waves break upon the rocks
crystal droplets shine
sunset and moonrise
benediction over earth
until end of time

on the field
where evening has died out,
my footsteps
the heart
that seeks something
I release to the sea

Kristjaan at Carpe Diem Haiku Kai features “troiku” (each line of initial haiku is beginning line of three more haiku in a series). I wrote my own haiku to begin…
bare branches burst forth
spring budding freshly green leaves
renewal of life
bare branches burst forth

birds improvise on treesong
winter’s day is done
spring buds fresh green leaves
young rabbits nibble new grass
first tulips open
renewal of life
gentle scent follows spring rain
promise of apples
