longing for the grass
blades wave under prairie wind
rustle in ditches
at bottom of pool
crawdads and minnows asleep
moon passes over
elusive fireflies
hide in long grasses near pond
flicker on and off

Listen to silent barn; cattle chores
finished when farmer turns out light
as darkness falls.
Listen to busy crickets, fiddle
incessantly from damp ditch grass
as darkness falls.
Listen to tall corn grow, stretching
and squeaking to whorled height
as darkness falls.
Listen to lightning bug wings
chirr while rising to spark new mate
as darkness falls.
Listen to killdeer warn their
nestlings to huddle in feather bed
as darkness falls.
Listen to far stars, singing ancient
alien lullaby with grandmother moon
as darkness falls.
A pastoral poem in six tercets, patterned after Jane Kenyon’s “Let Evening Come” and linked to Kim’s mini challenge at Imaginary Garden with Real Toads.

Inside a rustic cabin deep in Yukon territory, an old miner seasoned a simmering pot of venison stew.
Stroking his grizzled chin, he thought about the majestic elk herd he’d encountered migrating through a mountain meadow late that afternoon: one dominant young bull calling a large group of cows and calves to follow. After the herd disappeared over a ridge, a straggler came stumbling out of the trees: an old bull, wild-eyed and abandoned. Somehow he’d felt a kindred spirit to the animal…
Later, eerie howls of wolves on their twilight hunt woke him. He stirred the fire’s embers before going outside in the dark to check on his pack mule. Under waning moon, he was fumbling with the cabin latch on his return when far away an interrupted cry of the lone elk was heard as the hungry pack took him down.
An exercise in “prosery” for dVerse where Bjorn challenges us to write flash fiction of 144 words (exactly!) and include the phrase (from Robert Frost) in italics above.

After sunrise early one morning, I watched the full moon still hovering in the pale western sky. Momentarily, it appeared as a bright shiny coin balanced on an electric line; a high wire act, ready to roll like a big white marble down a track; a cosmic toy staged by a playful Designer. I wondered if the weight of it would bend the wire low to the ground causing sparks or if it would tip off and crash to earth, creating a sizable crater. As I observed, it fell…slow motion…through the wires and was caught safely in net of bare tree branches, averting disaster. The earth turned, the water tank filled, and I went back to chores.

A tan renga challenge at Carpe Diem Haiku Kai…original haiku by Basho followed by 2-line renga response by me 🙂
slowly spring
is making an appearance
moon and plum
fresh scent of opening buds
wafts sweetly on white moonbeams

image from Pinterest
crane and feathers
in a black robe
clouds of flowers
hungry crane dips into pond
scattered petals float away
a traveler’s heart
it also should look like
chinquapin flowers
chinese chestnut tree in bloom
curious tendrils reach out
moon past full
the beginning of a little more
darkness
gibbous seasons slowly change
beauty ripens over time
moon and flowers
the stupidity pricked by a needle
entering the colder season
stark white stars piercing black night
sharpness in the evening chill
first frost
when mums start to feel chilly
I get a cotton waist warmer
it’s time for scarves and sweaters
spring buds’ whispered memory

Decastitch poem of 10 lines, 10 syllables each; see Elsie at Ramblings of a Writer.
angels illuminate this holy night
wreath of candles on table flickers bright
white lights twinkle from pine branches in snow
winter moon on velvet night sheds soft glow
joyful gleam in children’s eyes wait to see
shimmering garlands encircle the tree
carolers who sing under lamp post’s glare
gather near fire’s hearth with stories to share
each window mirrors shining stars’ array
celebrate light of the world born today
Decided to expand it for smoother reading out loud…at our Christmas Eve service!
As angels illuminated this holy night,
we light wreath of candles flickering bright.
White lights twinkle from pine branches in snow,
winter moon on velvet night sheds softer glow.
Joyful gleam in child’s eyes waiting to see
shimmering tinsel garlands encircle the tree.
Carolers, who sing under lamp post’s glare,
will gather near fire’s hearth with stories to share.
Each window reflects a star pointing the way
as we celebrate the Light of the World today!

i gaze at full moon
rising thru pine tree’s needles,
caught in silhouette
on ripples of waves,
docked boat gently rocking as
moonlight washes shore
white egret shimmers
while pecking in moon water,
scoops up silver fish

Carpe Diem Haiku Kai’s ”Renga Challenge” create a renga with haiku by Basho.
rainy season
sea glow lights held up
by the night watchman
pale koi bubble to surface
paddle junk into harbor
the blue sea
in waves smelling of saké
tonight’s full moon
sitting with friend on the beach
quietly sip from warm cup
on a bare branch
a crow settled down
autumn evening
vermillion koyo fallen
colors faded with sunset
