Carpe Diem’s prompt from Jane Reichhold’s “Dictionary of Haiku”: beach
mesmerizing swell
turquoise waves break in white froth

“Home is everything you can walk to.” ― Jerry Spinelli, Stargirl
To hike a mountain wearing backpack is divine; climb to cool heights with marmots, and drink in far vistas. To stroll barefoot along the sandy beach is mesmerizing; play catch-me-if-you-can with foamy waves, and chase seagulls. To meander with walking stick on fern trail through piny forest is refreshing; listen for bears, and follow a stony stream. To exercise with dog on rural mile is simple enjoyment; be led over gently rolling hill, push into prairie wind, and gaze at the wide expanse of sky.
walk down gravel road
see the farmer working field
pure ambulation

Turkish peninsula is favored tourist destination. Rent a sailboat at local marina and explore a nearby cove’s cerulean waters, surrounded by lush green hills of olive, tangerine and palm trees. Or stroll the narrow, pebbly beach below Bodrum’s charming white stone houses with mud-thatched flat roofs. Swim with the fish by day, dance under stars by night.
body washed on beach
dinghy overturns in crossing
weep with refugees

stroll down sandy beach
wind lifts hair in rippling waves
feel salt spray touch face
feel salt spray touch face
seagulls fight over starfish
sound of wings flapping
sound of wings flapping
gulls hover until sundown
beachcombers keep shells

My ears would smile to hear the Aussies talk
Heart sail away on Sydney’s opera house
Mind glow with climb of Table Cape lighthouse
My eyes would laugh at sunrise on red Rock.
Experience down-under is my wish
View platypus, wombat, and kangaroo
Hear Aboriginal didgeridoo (whoo-oo)
Taste fresh-caught barramundi in my dish.
To drive along high cliffs of Ocean Road
And lay upon Johanna’s sandy beach
To know koala habitat’s in reach,
This be the best stay-cation i download!

–dedicated to my brother, Dale, who is a safe harbor
“i am an island!” he declared,
staking his flag in the sand;
she shook her head laughing,
“how so?” but she already
understood his answers.
other shores beckoned her
yet he seemed content to
stay, digging in soft sands;
she paddled to a far harbor
uncertain when she’d return.
aren’t we all little islands?
“i mean, you’re there and i’m
here with an ocean of words
between us”…not to mention
thoughts, plans and dreams.
always creating ripples in
concentric circles, our ever-
widening waves roll outward
to crash in foamy surf upon
others’ glistening shores.
“why not leave your island?”
she urged but he insisted that
he liked his own beach view;
so we keep paddling rowboats
to reach each other’s worlds.
in space between, we send sea gulls and
glass bottles carrying messages of love.
